Embrace Data, Test and Be Courageous

Following on from last week’s event I’ve been reflecting on some of the conversations I had and people not understanding all the elements involved in marketing and how they all interact. Nearly all the conversations I had last week were around this and led to me saying the same thing…

"Marketing has a science behind it."

Once you’ve got your plan and you start delivering it, it’s important to look at the numbers and see what they are saying. They tell you a story about what’s happening, what’s resonating with you customers, is your messaging reaching your target audience and a lot more besides.

We all want our marketing to be perfect before we send it out, but as every marketer knows it’s about it being 80-90% correct and testing. Testing, learning, evolving and not being afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes will happen as it’s all part of the journey but learn from them through the data, learn quickly, respond swiftly but thoughtfully and evolve.

Your marketing plan, messaging and activity is not something set in stone, it needs to be regularly reviewed, adapted as you learn from your target audience, your numbers and the testing you do.

Remember it’s ok to not get something 100% correct first time, if it happens well done, that’s amazing, there are still things to learn from that in the data and how you might be able to improve on it.
